New Zealand's Most Beautiful City

Rotorua’s gardens contribute just as much to the city’s iconic features as do its architectural and natural features, perhaps that are why Rotorua continues to reap accolades like New Zealand’s Most Beautiful City (judged tops in 2002, 2000 and 1999). Whether it is floral bedding plant displays, luxuriant inner-city shrubberies, avenue tree plantings, magnificent individual specimens or the abundant lush, native bush, they all reflect the commitment the district and its people have to showcase our natural “clean, green” image.

People came from all over the world to 'take the waters' at the Bath House. Now home to Rotorua’s award-winning museum, the building utilised thermal water and mud for a variety of bathing, mud and massage treatments. The remnants of those treatments can still be seen today at the Rotorua Museum.
In addition the thermal waters featured at the Blue Baths and Polynesian Spa both also in Government Gardens.
